Ink Sweets

Brand & Squarespace Design

inksweets.com

Ink Sweets is the antithesis to the all white, flowery, typical wedding cake design. It’s a luxury business intended to serve badasses and rebels— folks who really want their cakes to represent them artistically. It’s run by the incredibly talented Leah Backstrom, who brings her out of the box designs to delicious life with her hard work and artistic talent.

For the brand of Ink Sweets, I focused on a few important keywords: professional, luxury, and nontraditional. The logo is based off of classical tattoo text to reflect the business’s namesake. It includes the business’s incredible slogan (Eat Cake Like You Give a $%^&!) and is available in both white and black color-ways. To support it, I designed a fun and witty illustration to be used on merchandise like stickers and t-shirts: a cake with a dripping knife with a banner wrapping around it all.

Later, Ink Sweets approached me to design a new Squarespace site for them. She was feeling as though her DIY site wasn't representing her brand as the high-quality service that it is. She wanted people to know right off the first page view whether or not her work was for them. Keeping her content largely in place, I refreshed her website with bold text, beautiful arching imagery, negative space, and asymmetric layouts to display her cakes in an artistic and clean way. I am particularly fond of the bold footer design for Ink's site, which includes a scrolling marquee of all the publications from which she's received accolades, as well as the spacious and unusual "Our Menu" page.

“I'm completely obsessed with my new website. Annie made the whole process so easy and she was able to infuse my business' personality with the professionalism needed for me to book clients seamlessly. She was quick with the design and build out and was more than accommodating when I asked for little changes here and there. She also took the time to show me how to make edits within the site so that I felt comfortable with it moving forward. The process was fun, smooth, and easy!”
